The first stage of the SDLC is called the planning stage. This is the stage at which the stakeholders of the business (e.g. managers) realise a problem or spot an opportunity. This problem or opportunity is then discussed and the IT that may be used to implement a process is also discussed and planned.
The managers or planners may also discuss whether or not the new process or new idea will benefit the organisation and to what extent. If it seems like the new process or idea will benefit the organisation then they continue on to the next stage of the life cycle. However before they move on, the project needs to be looked at from not only a technical side but also from other aspects (e.g. legal issues). Once these issues are dealt with and overcome then a project plan is drawn up which illustrates the next stage of the sdlc of that project.
