Over the next few weeks I wish to look at each type of information system individually. In today’s blog I will focus on Executive Support Systems (ESS).
ESS, also known as Executive Information Systems, are designed to facilitate senior management in making key strategic decisions. An ESS is software which allows companies to sort their data into summarised reports. These reports enable executive-level management access to reports from all area of the business including billing, cost accounting, staff, scheduling and more.
Executive level management need to be able to make informed decisions quickly and decisively and don’t want to be wasting their time shifting through irrelevant information. An ESS can supply the summarized information executives need and yet provide the opportunity to drill down to more detail if necessary.
An executive’s needs are always changing and new dilemmas emerge on a daily basis, thus it is crucial for the ESS to be flexible and easy to manage. ESS uses graphical presentation as it is much easier for the end user to understand the information:
Companies can buy pre-designed software packages, usually designed for a specific industry or can get their own software package customised to their specific needs.
Some of the advantages of ESS’s include:
- Provides timely delivery of company summary information
- Provides better understanding of information
- Filters data for better time management
- Provides system for improvement in information tracking
