Today I will look at Social Media, a major trend in information systems while discussing both new trends that will be arriving in the near future . The internet has had a significant influence on how people work and communicate.
Many people have different ideas of what social media is. If we break up these two words we get media, an instrument on communication like for example a radio, the television and a newspaper, so therefore social media would be like a social instrument of communication. There are many websites that not only give you information, but also interact with you while giving you that information. For example commenting on posts, letting you vote on an article, internet forums, web blogs, social networks and podcasts. About.com describes social media in a very simple and understandable way ” Think of regular media as a one-way street where you can read a newspaper or listen to a report on television, but you have very limited ability to give your thoughts on the matter. Social media, on the other hand, is a two-way street that gives you the ability to communicate too.” Social media involves how people create, share and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities or networks.
Social Media network sites –
Facebook – Was founded by Mark Zuckerburg and launches on February 4th 2004. It has approximately over 1 billion users. Being a users on Facebook means you can create profiles with photos, interests etc. Users can communicate with friends through both public and private messages, they can also create and join interest groups and “like pages. Facebook can now be found on most mobile phone devices allowing people to keep in touch with friends wherever they are in the world.
Twitter – “Twitter is a real-time information network that connects you to the latest stories, ideas, opinions and news about what you find interesting.
At the heart of Twitter are small bursts of information called Tweets. Each Tweet is 140 characters long, but don’t let the small size fool you—you can discover a lot in a little space. You can see photos, videos and conversations directly in Tweets to get the whole story at a glance, and all in one place. See it in action.” (Twitter.com) Check this website out to find out more of how twitter work – https://twitter.com/about
Consumer research undertaken has suggested major trends to be announced in social media. Some of these include “more time invested in mobile”, consumers now looking more and more to their smartphones i-pads etc to access social media. Another major trend includes “twitter drives social TV” for example when big events come to our screens like Super Bowl, American Idol or the elections, people are simultaneously using Twitter to share their thoughts and experiences with friends. Another trend featured is “customer care is the new social care”, this is where companies provide customer service through social media. Customers are more and more inclined to ask a question through Facebook and Twitter rather than contacting the company through telephone. We will also see a lot more companies promoting their businesses and products through social media. These are just some of the major trends emerging through social media and I’m sure we will see many more soon.
Online shopping has also seen major trends over the years with the help of information systems in tow. Some of these include: in-store pick up, mobile apps, pick up depots, social networking, daily deals and flash sales, retail based social networks along with many more. The customer will have a lot more choice when it comes to shopping and will also be able to compare prices between stores.
