In the early 20th century it was predicted that computers in the future would weigh no more than 1.5 tons. While this forecast is technically “accurate”, it is still way off the mark! Seeing as the iPhone 5 weighs less than four ounces, the experts at Popular Mechanics failed to foresee that computers would weigh 12,000 times less than their best estimate.
Since then, computers have gotten smaller and smaller as well as lighter, faster, cheaper and easier to use. From mainframes to mini computers and PC’s to smartphones the evolution of computing technology has taken great strides with no chance of stopping any time soon.
Computers have moved from data centers to desktops to laps to pockets, showing that computing has become increasingly closer to our everyday lives. They will continue to become embedded in all the devices we use and nearly every object that surrounds us. It is said that the world produces 10 billion microprocessors per year but only a fraction of them are used to make desktops, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. A majority are embedded in everyday products like washing machines, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, and wristwatches. This is because it is much cheaper to make an appliance when all the information is in the software and it is easy to duplicate and extremely cheap once the first unit is created. This is in contrast to the mechanical knob on a washing machine, which is costly and complicated to make. The processors in these products allow users to communicate with them more easily and it is clear to see that we are just at the starting point for the potential for what the world could be like when all of the products can also communicate with each other.
