System Analsyts- what qualifications do you need to be a system analyst

26 Feb

Hey guys:D
So is there any of ye out there who are passionate about our IS classes and you really want to become a system analyst?
Well if you are, here are some of the skills that you would need to be a system analyst

The skills that a system analyst should have are classified into the following
1. Analytical skills
2. Management skills
3. Technical skills
4. Interpersonal skills

Today I will go through the Analytical skills that you would need to be a system analyst

Analytical skills:
A system analyst should posses various skills to effectively carry out their job. Specifically, theses skills can be divided, into some of the following categories:
* System study
* Problem Identification
* Organisational knowledge
*Problem analysis and problem solving

System Study:
This is about knowing what the system is. This is probably the most important skill that a system analyst should have, they should be able to identify work assignment as a system. A system analysts should be able to identify each of the systems characteristics such as inputs, outputs, processes, etc.

Problem Identification:

This is the difference between the existing situation and the desired situation defined as a problem.  The manager defines differences by comparing the current situation to the output of a model that predicts what the output should be.

Problem analysis and problem solving:

Herbert Simon proposed the following approach for problem analysis and problem solving:

1. Intelligence: During this phase, all information relevant to the problem is collected

2. Design: Alternatives are formulated during this phase

3. Choice: the best alternative solution is chosen in this phase

4. Implementation: the solution is then put into practice during this phase

Organisational Knowledge:

This is where the person must understand how the organisation works whether he/she is an in-house or contract software developer.  They must understand the functions and the procedures of the particular organisation for which they are working for.  An example of the organisational knowledge that a system analyst should know would be :they should understand the organisation’s internal politics such as finding the experts in different concerned subject areas.

Technical skills:

These are the skills that focus of the procedures and techniques for operation analysis, system analysis, and computer science.  These skills include: THe ability to understand computers, databases, operating systems and so on.  For a system analyst to develop a computer-based information system , they must understand information technologies , their potentials and mor importantly their limitations.  A system analyst would need technical skills not only to perform tasks assigned to him/her but also to communicate with other people that they would work with in systems development.
