Trends in Information Systems: Trends seen in Apple products

3 Mar

One of my group members (111346901) talked about mobile phones and tablets and how these are influencing trends in information systems. Today I will look solely on the iPhone and how it as an information system has changed significantly over the years since its first arrival to the shop shelf.

Take a look at this graph, you are able to see exactly how the iPhone has increased in popularity.

Five Years Of The iPhone

Image(“How the iPhone Industry changed the Smartphone Industry, Clark,2012)

This coming June it will be 6 years since the iPhone first hit our stores. Many of whom worked in the IT sector taught it would be a flop. “For one thing, it was ridiculously expensive. For another, it was something no one had ever really heard of before: a smartphone targeted primarily at consumers, rather than business people. Everybody knew that the smartphone market was a business market, especially Research In Motion, makers of the iconic BlackBerry.” Clark (2012). Five years later and the fifth generation is on our shelves and it being one of the most popular gadgets on our planet. The iPhones demographic has somewhat changed over the years as well. In recent years, Apple has somewhat began to eat into the low end feature phone market. This has created many problems for companies such as Nokia and Sony Ericson, both companies that made their names selling quality, affordable feature phones.

Siri lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking the way you talk. Siri is so easy to use and does so much, you’ll keep finding more and more ways to use it. (Apple, 2012)

As an information system the iPhone has changed significantly over the years. The new iPhone (the iPhone 5) is a lot lighter, faster and taller. Siri was introduced to the iPhone 4s.

Apple are making their products more and more impressive by the day. They now have a wide variey of products including :       iPhone, iPad, iPad mini, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, a wide range of different iPods as well as iTunes. The internet can now be accessed almost anywhere at any time through the use of these devices.

Without the use of information systems we would not have seen the trends that we have seen. We can expect that changes in Apples products through information systems will significantly change over the next 5/10/15 years for sure. And we already know that the iPhone 6 will out next July 2013 with more new and exciting features for sure. Smartphones and gadgets are becoming more and more popular every day. Even the word “APP”, how many people used it before the iPhone arrived!!!
