Types of IS

5 Mar

There are many types of IS used for decision making. The most common of these are:

  1. Executive Support Systems (ESS)
  2.  Management Information Systems (MIS)
  3.  Decision Support Systems (DSS)
  4. Knowledge Management Systems (KMS)
  5. Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)
  6. Office Automation Systems

In this blog I am going to discuss what Decision Support Systems are and how they help in decision making. A decision Support system is a computer-based information system that supports business or organizational decision making activities. A properly designed DSS is a software based system intended to help decision makers compile useful information from raw data, documents, personal knowledge, and/or business models to identify and solve problems and make decisions. DSSs serve the management, operations, and planning levels of an organization and help to make decisions.Information that a DSS might gather and present would be:

  • Accessing all of your current information assets, including legacy and relational data sources, cubes, data warehouses, and data marts
  • Comparative sales figures between one week and the next
  • Projected revenue figures based on new product sales assumptions
  • The consequences of different decision alternatives, given past experience in a context that is described

A decision support system presents information graphically and can include an expert system. It may be aimed at business executives or some other group of knowledge workers. They are specifically designed to help management make decisions in situations where there is uncertainty about the possible outcomes of those decisions. DSS often involves use of complex spreadsheet and databases to create “what-if” models.

Hey! Ya sure.. the main types of IS used are:

    Executive Support Systems (ESS)
    Management Information Systems (MIS)
    Decision Support Systems (DSS)
    Knowledge Management Systems (KMS)

Moe info can be got about these at: http://www.tutor2u.net/business/ict/intro_information_system_types.htm

But there are loads more! It depends on which department of an orgainzation you are on about. For example Knowledge Work Systems (KWS) are used at the production stage to help with the design and modelling of a product. In the human resource sector Inforamtion systems such as a training and development system to track training and skills on an operational level or another example would be a compensation analysis system which is used to monitor salaries wages and benefits.

Hope this was some help for you 🙂
