In my previous blogs I have discussed how information systems are used in the running of a business, the history of information systems, I explained Accounting Information Systems to ye and I told ye about databases and DBMS (how data gets stored and put to good use with the help of information systems.) So for my final blog I have decided explain to ye in briefly what exactly an information system is (seeing as I never actually said what it was) I’ll keep it short and sweet 🙂
An information system is a set of interrelated components that support many operations within an organization including planning, decision making and control- all of which are important within an organization. There are five main components of an information system which are Hardware, Software, Data, People and Telecommunication Networks.
They’re used all over the world to make life easier! The last example of what information systems can be used for that I’ll give ye is about how Marketers use information systems for their own needs. I’m sure most of ye own a loyalty card or a club card for Tescos or Dunnes or any other store. If and when ye have signed up for it ye would know that in order to get one you must fill out a small basic application form which would include details of Gender, Age, Geographic Region, Marital Status, etc. This data is saved into a system. Now every time you use your club card all items purchased in that transaction will be recorded away, with the help of an information system. Marketers will then use this information that has been processed to see what kind of people are buying certain products. They might use it to see what items people are buying together or their main one would be to use this information system to see if they have got the right target market for their product. We’re all part of information systems without even knowing it!
Thanks for reading and I hope ye all enjoyed my blogs!
